Im looking to buy a new 280 or 225x, and am trying to find out if the 280s are actually good realiable motors, thanks for any help

Absolutely! Think of how popular the 2.5 EFI series has been since 1992. Millions of these motors have been sold. In 1998, Mercury refined this motor (not sure of the changes exactly) and the HP rating went up by 20. These are extremely strong reliable motors if operated properly. Where you run into trouble is if you start reving them 8,000+ RPM. They tend to need rebuilds as would be expected under these conditions.
If this is going on the Stoker there is no doubt in my mind I would put the 280 on period end of conversation. This motor will make that boat come alive.
Hey, do you happen to know of any Stokers with a Merc for sale? My dad is searching for one to no avail. Looking in the $15,000 - $20,000 price range. Thanks.

thanks for the input, i was just told by on guy that the 280s are good for a year then rebuild, so far no one else seems to think so. Hey HD your dads looking for the older style stoker, is that correct?
The 280 is an OK motor ( I like the 260 and Drag a lot better), but anyhow the motors need rings when the leakdown exceeds 10% that is right around 100hrs, if you use a good oil like merc racing (spectro gloden) or Alisyn. The pistons in the motors are of very poor quality, and will also require replacing after the 2nd or 3rd rebuild.
ET
Use the merc High Performance oil and 94 octane or better.Then leave the rev limiter in and you should see over 300 hours like I did.Sold it and it's probably still running.
