Could this be your number? 3999289....454.......71-79...2 or 4 bolt, some "CE" replacement blocks had four bolt main cap
Sleek
I think your 8's are 9's. That would give you a 2 bolt main 454.

Sleek found it at the same time.
well, it was dark! i will investigate more tomorrow,i will also pull the valve covers and check the numbers on them.thanx, guys, i was wondering if i hadn't made that mistake myself, but,i reassured myself that i couldn't have read 2 numbers wrong!L.O.L.
i checked again, the number was 399289,for the block!the heads were336781 stamped pass. also had gm 9t, andc 21-74 stamped in them!
Those should be sweet heads in good condition.
From Mortec:
336781.....73-85...oval...OPEN...454, 118cc chamber, 256/114cc ports
Large oval ports, open chambers, good performance head for a mid-range RPM motor (like a boat motor). I have a set of 049's with very similar specs (same basically). A local racing shop here in my city says they respond VERY well to their stage-1 porting (no, Hi-tech doesn't port heads) to the tune of 70 to 80 HP typically. You probably have the small valve sizes (2.06"I/1.73"E). Congrats on a nice motor it looks like.
thanx, smokin!i will keep and use them then.i was under the impression that i needed rectangle ports for horsepower!
IMO on a 4k to 6kRPM engine you are better off with the large ovals. the huge rectangle ports are great above 6k but the airflow velocity is so low at mid revs that the engine literally starves trying to inhale thru tubes way too big, fuel dropout & puddling happens. Hurts Torque production a lot, thus hurts HP production till the RPM's climb enough for the engine to use those big ports. For most boat engines, you'll never rev that high.
