Thread: Intake and carb.

    Currently i have a 454 bbc, 030 over, trw L2377 pistons, isky cam .565 lift, 232 dur @.050, harland sharp roller rockers, large valves. On top is a holley 650 DP, edlebrock tm2-0 intake. Intake is 2000-6000 rpm range and built it 1977. I have a fresh rebuilt 12jb berkeley with b imp. 9 begree wedge, ride plate. All this is in a 1976 sleekcraft 18ft. It ran out at 4800 rpms and 65.9 mph on gps. would like input on a good intake and was thinking about an 850dp. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

    Hello BIG TEX..........A 850 carb would be a great choice for your application........Cant think of a better carb for the money......Take a look at the 850 that we build ......Thanx alot, Jesse @ BIGS eek!

    And can't think of a nicer place to put your shinney new Biggs 850 dp ( in your choice of colors) than on top of a beautiful Victor JR. manifold. Can be had new for $203.00 from Summit Racing. Don

    For a 454 or even a 468 spinning under 5000 rpm...I would belive an 850 would be to large of a carb. I'm using a 715 Vac secondary on a 468 at 5200 rpm and the motor runs fine...Bolted on a friends 850 DP, tweeked it in and it did nothing, No more rpm's and a little dogie in the midrange area. I'm back to the 715...I agree that a 750 cfm would be a great all around carb for motors in that rpm area. Just my 2 cents!

An 850 would limit your throttle response for cruising around the slow areas on the water.
    "Bigger is not always better" Remember that. A motor only needs 1.2cfm per Horsepower to perform. An advertised 850cfm...Big deal! You motor will still only pull 600 actual cfm at 6hg vacuum and 500HP average, with a 9-9.5 compression around 6K. 850cfm???? Not enough vacuum signal for a "boats" intended use. Stick with the 750DP with a leaner emulsion circuit.

    Ya know Hammer I'm running a 715 also. I've just not heard anyone complain about an 850 before and was even considering giving on a trial. I really like my carb but I was thinking if I bump the cam and heads then I might need more carb. Don

    Don I'm using the 715 on a 468 Chev with 10:1 Comp. A Comp Cam 550 lift 232/237 duration, 110 lob sep. Over transom Headers, Stealth Intake. And the the heads are 049's Oval port open chamber. With all kinds of work done to them. As I stated befor...I tried an 850 DP, and it did nothing for (me). If any thing maybe a 750 would be ideal but I cant see spending the money unless I would be spining much higher rpm's.
    A friend of mine from some years ago had a 468 12:1 motor that saw rpm's in the high 6000 area....with the same 715 carb! And that's a fact!
