I just bought a boat that has a 454 indamar eng. The oil that was being used was castrol syntec 10w-30. Most of the boating will be done in hot weather. I used to use 5w-30 in my old 454 so what do you guys and gals think? Is the 10W-30 ok? Thanks for the info.....

Your going to get a BUNCH of recommendations but what I use in my boat is 5w-40 mobil 1 synthetic (expensive these days). Mobil 1 I think has saved my a$$ a couple of times due to a cylinder failure and a crew member over tightning my MSD collar!!!!

I have a 454 blower motor and I use 40w, I change it very often (more like after a few hard passes)

    Extremely hot conditions: straight 40
    Milder conditions straight 30
Three vehicles all close to 400K miles on them never a problem. Several boats that ofcourse I run/ran the guts out of. All of em straight weight. Two very respected engine bulders in this area. They say 40w Quaker State. just my .02

There are several threads about this on here. I use 10-30 Mobil-1 in my truck (Vortec 7400) as well as in the boat (496HO). Both do great. I am usually boating in 100+ degree ambient temps. I don't see any problem with it, especially since NASCAR engines are running near 0-wt synthetics.

dance with who brung ya... I run 10-30 castrol on a 20 year old engine and didn't use a drop last year... also, a boat motor shouldn't get very hot.. not like you're going up hills...

    Look in your manual:
Mine clearly states for AIR temp 50F and above straight 40 weight is recommended.
Try this: If your running multi vis. in your car/truck. Get it up to operating temperature and drain the oil. I've done it many times. Worked at a dealership when I was in H/S. I guarantee you the oil will run out like water.
The two mentioned engine builders I spoke about in a previous post, both say they can tell an engine that has run multi by the wear on the bearings.
Now I'll ask you this. Do you think hot oil in the engine that has thinned out to the consistency of water is providing the lubrication that your bearings need? Versus a straight weight thats stay thicker???????????
