Thread: Mech advance or lock it down ?

I currently have a mechanical advance dist in my blown BBF. I had it recurved at a local shop. At the time I didn't have a MAP sensor. I know have the abilty to retard timing as I'm making boost. Which leads me to the question; am I better off not having any advance in the distributor ? Does it make any difference at all ? Should I just remove it and install another that's locked out ? My box allows me to dial up timing retard during starting and while under boost.

I don't know about setting up a dist for a supercharged engine, but a NA engine on a jet likes to have all the advance in by 3000 rpm. I would imagine a blown engine is similar, and with as little time as an engine runs below 3k, and with as little load as there is on it while it's there, I would think a locked dist would be the deal.

Chris, Lock it out. And you won't need to retard the timing to start it.

That's what the plan is, lock it down. Thanks as always for the advice and Merry Christmas !!!
