Without a diode when you turn the boat of it could keep running. I thought the diode was built in most alternators already, but I'm not sure.
Hey Gang,
I understand I'm suspose to loop the #1 wire back to the ign switch with a diode to keep juice from feeding back into the switch, but I'm not to familar with Diodes. I went to Radio Shack and picked one up but I don't know.
Can I run this wire elsewhere or just forget the diode?

If you get a "one wire kit" you just hook up the single large wire and cut the others. You can get them marine ceritified, or, if like me your engine is substancially above the gunwales, you can just buy parts from Jeg's or Summit.
If you have a covered engine compartment I'd make sure you have a marine cert. one I think they have screen that keeps the spark inside the alt. and away from fumes.
