In June 2008, Governor Napolitano signed a bill that would allow Operating Under the Influence (OUI) laws and penalties to mirror those of vehicular Drinking Under the Influence (DUI) (where applicable). Changes, effective January 1, 2009, have been made to statutes regarding operating a watercraft while intoxicated, including increasing civil penalties up to $4,600 and jail time.
Since the OUI bill, Arizona Game and Fish Department (AGFD) has partnered with the Governor's Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) to develop a media campaign the entails a series of public service announcements to educate the public about the consequences of operating a boat or driving a car while intoxicated.
AGFD and GOHS produced a video called "OUI-DUI Working Together" that is both in English and Spanish. This public service announcement will be aired consistently three weeks before the Labor Day weekend so that the public is aware that there will be OUI-DUI checkpoints and saturation patrols for intoxicated operators of cars and boats statewide.
