Here's what I know a poker run to be. I'm a Canadian though, so it could be a completely different thing up here.
It isn't a race, it's a pleasure cruise. The first one to finsh doesn't normally get a prize. Everyone cruises together to five different rest stops. At the rest stops, there is usually some social activity such as food, chatting, whatever. Also at each stop, a card is drawn from a deck of cards.
At the end of the poker run, a prize is given to the best poker hand.
It's just an excuse to get together and run boats together. You don't have to have the best hardware or be the best driver to enjoy it. If the people are good, it can be a ton of fun. It's all about the cruising and the company.
