Ever heard of the Silver State Classic Challenge race? If not, take a look here: http://www.silverstateclassic.com.
It's a race in central Nevada with cars averaging anywhere from 95mph to 200+mph over a 90mile stretch of highway. There is only one way to spectate this event though...to volunteer.
Currently, the Timing & Scoring division of SSCC is still in need of 4 volunteers for the race which takes place on Sunday, 9-22-02. The race is based out of Ely, NV.
If anyone is interested in working this event, please shoot me an e-mail at: keith@stvboats.com so we can get you a room set up.

At the museum in the Riverside Hotel & casino in Laughlin is the 69' Camero called 'Big Red'. Is it still the record holder of the Silver State Classic? I read about it in Hot Rod mag about 15years ago. LDFTRBT

That's a nasty strech of road they run on up there too. I spent a summer up in Ely about 8 years ago and everyone was talking about this race. I didn't get to see it, but the last 10 or so miles are twisty curvy nasty canyon type roads with a drop-off on the south side of the road. It would be well worth watching. Besides, Ely is really pretty country. Might be snowing by now though. LOL

I have a friend that is presently building a 442 that they're hoping to do 200mph in.....w/a Olds 455 for power! I'm looking forward to seeing it happen.

Leadfoot - Big Red is an AWESOME car, but not the record holder. Current Guinness "Public Highway Land Speed Record" is Chuch Shafer in a Lebaron bodied NASCAR. 207.7mph AVERAGE over the 90 miles.
Jordan - the only part of the race like that is the "Narrows". It's a canyon with about a 40-50' drop on one side, and a canyon wall on the other. I've personally run through there at 130mph in the corners in my TA, but it does look intimidating.
Mike - Tell him to bring it when it's done!
Crazy Indian - Bikes are fun...but they don't let them run in this event.
Anyone interested in helping with the event?

STV, I would like to volunteer if I can. I have drill with the guard that weekend but let me see what I can swing. I won't need a room, I will bring my M/H. What are the exact day and times needed? Todd

Hey Spectratoad, the plan is this: I normally arrive Friday evening (leave after work) and get in around 9pm or so.
Saturday is the tech inspection/car show at the local highschool football field. Normally, Timing & Scoring will have a meeting around 1pm or so, so you really need to be in Ely by 1pm at the latest.
Sunday is the race. Timing & Scoring are on course by about 5am, do the setup and get ready. The race is always over by 2pm (that's when the road opens to regular traffic again). I'm usually back in Vegas no later than 5pm. At the last event, we were done by 12:30, and I was back in Vegas by 4pm.
