What is the best way to check the alignment of twin outdrives? Can it be done well at home or are special tools/jigs needed?

With drives level with the bottom of the boat measure the distance between the front of the drives just above the point then measure the distance between the center of the prop shafts.
the prop shaft distance should be about 1/4 to 3/8 more than the front measurement.
To adjust losten the lock nuts on the tie - bar and turn it to shorten or lengthen the bar. When you get it where you want it just lock it down again.

Thanks for the info, I thought about measuring in that fashion but wondered if it was too simple. When I did measure it, I found that the drives were toed in about 5/8". I'm in the process of finding from the manufacturer if that is too much. Any ideas on specs?

It all depends on the boat.
    Some need more than others.
Try with the drives paralell and then with a little toe in.
I think mine has 1/4 inch toe in.
