Thread: Impeller material ?

Quick question: Is there an easy way to determine if an impeller is aluminum or stainless steel without taking the pump apart. I shined a flashligh into intake but cannot tell what the impeller is made of. I saw no green ( zinc chromate). Edges seem pretty sharp. When I tapped it there was a " ring " to the metal. I tried scratching it- seemed pretty hard. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Btw great hot boat forums been reading alot.

Nice clear "ring" is stainless; dull "thunk"/ring is aluminum.

Great ! Stainless impeller is a pleasant surprise . There are a few small < 1/8" nicks in the leading edges. I do not think they are a concern. Also it has an approx. 1/4" thick black (plastic?) wear ring which looks tight and in good shape.
