Thread: Hydros vs Flats Pt 2

After watching the debate of these 2 types I think the outboard steer hydro is far superior as a rough water lake boat. I have a clip of BAH running in the rough stuff.

Nice clip KF, I wonder what the length vs width ratio is for that boat compared to say a small Kurtis.

The boat in Question runs in the Unlimited Light class.
They have six combination options and these guys run option 6.
Boat length rule is Min. 20' max 26'
    Width: 12' 6"
Minimum wieght minus driver: 2,700 lbs
    Engine: Iron block 468 max.
Blower: 6-71 max, no screws, spinning no more than 80% of crank speed.
Heads: A lot of good Aluminum heads are allowed, but no pro-stock style.
Injector: Max. of 8 hat only nozzles. No EFI.
    Fuel: Gas or Methanol
Option 6 is the only supercharger allowable option for this class.
These rules are in place to be fair to the carburetor guys also in the class. Engine longevity is also considered given the size of the race courses.
The grand prix class runs a similar hull with much less restrictions. Those boats are much faster.
Maybe one our dragboat representatives could let us know the specs. on a Kurtis Hydro??

The Kurtis is approx 18'6" with an approx 8' beam giving a 2.3 advantage ratio in length. Hitting the length rule in the middle for the big boats at 23' with a 12' beam puts it under 2.0 not to mention the bigger footprint for the same size chop.

We are not trying to compare Hydros to flats are we?
Hopefully just listing the pro and cons of each?

When this topic first popped up, that was the impression I got. And thats all good.
I thought it would be fun to show some of these guys (that didn't allready know...) that rough water hydros (of all shapes and sizes) have been tearing up rough water for the last 70 years.
If anyone has ever converted a circle hydro to ski use, please post a pic. I would love to see it.

    I agree.
The closest thing to a combination of circle/drag hydro. Would be the ski hydros. They are a little wider.
But still wouldnt go charging into a turn with one.
Anybody looking for one as a project. There is a Cheyenne ski hydro up this way that has never been rigged. Needs paint or gel (its in primer now).
Has outboard steering parts. And other misc. Oh, Its on a trailer also.

My big Kurtis 500 is 93 inches wide and 19 foot long, 20 foot with the out board steering. I'm not sure if Kurtis Kraft makes a bigger boat

Is the Kurtis 500 the 'big" drag hydro and the 501 the "baby" Kurtis?
