I have a stock 454 and am tearing it down and going to be building it back up. What would be the max RPMS on a stock 454? What kind of things should i do to strengthen the bottom end? I want this motor to last. I dont plan on going FI with this motor ( i have a 396 block that i may build after this for that ).
Also, what kind of pistions to cams combo would some of you recommend. I dont need anything crazy but i want to beef it up a bit. The 396 that was in the boat had a mean loop in the idle, the pistons where domed (not sure what the compression was or what brand) and i'm not even sure what cam is in it (boat came with the motor like that).

Is it a 4-bolt main with forged crank? That will have some effect on your rpm. Have the rods rebuilt and add ARP rod bolts. Add a good oil pump.
Stock 454 Mag bottom end, 6000 rpm for a season

Note evidence of a "little" heat around the saddles!

Did you ever check, or even change the oil in that thing??? Too bad!

Assuming you had oil in it, this is the typical way BBC die. You may be pumping the oil pan dry or have an oil pan control problem allowing the oil to run away from the pickup. Lot's of other possibliltys also but there was no oil sometime between the main bearing and the crank. At only 6000 rpm, I'd have to rule out crankshaft flex which we see in the blown stuff. Some other possible are:
Line hone not straight. Main bearing clearance incorrect (too tight). Crankshaft bent (many factory chevy cranks are bent brand new as much as .005). Oil galley restriction.
I'd like to know if #1 main bearing was OK and not spun? Just curious.

These kind of questions are tough as there are so many ways to build the BBC. And very opinionated. I'll try but it will just be in general. I don't know which 454 you have as some are 4 bolt main and steel cranks and others are 2 bolt and cast cranks.
RPM I would say 6500 being long life with 7000 more the norm. The lower rpm the longer the life on most everything.
To strengthen the bottom end? Forged steel crankshaft and LS-6 or equivalent connecting rods with good rod bolts. A 4 bolt main block ads strength though how much is widely debated.
You need to describe your boat, what you want to end up with performance wise. Explain in detail what you expect the motor to be as far as performance. And your budget.
