Thread: Timing Ques?

I'm new at this timing stuff so bear with me here.
I know you take the initial timing and add your advance to get your total timing. Now, how do you set your timing if the Dist is locked out?.
    Thanks

Mine is set for 34 degrees (locked in) Fire the motor and put the mark on the 34 (of course it helps to have a degreed damper wheel)

You are running no advance in the distributor when it's locked out. You run it all initial as said above. The timing never changes from idle to full rpm. If you have a good timing light with the dial like a snap on set the dial on the total timing you want and put the mark on zero. done deal.
Only low compression engines can usually get away with this because of all the advance at start up (blown, turbo, etc).

Whats the purpose of setting timing at 34 locked out?

It's done on Blown motors because we cannot run that much timing anyway with 36 degrees being a max. Locking the advance gives better throttle response, one less variable of advance weights, and the engine idles smoother with less engine surging (blower cycling) at idle.
