My Buddy is looking at a 1993 Maxum sc2300. Its a closed bow with a mild 454 and a Bravo 1 outdrive. Its suppossed to do low 60's. Are these boats built well? Anything I should look at before he buys it(specifically)? The boats been garage kept since new. The owner also installed through transom exhaust!

    It's a Bayliner in a different color scheme....:frown:

A neighbor has one, '96 model, closed bow, low horse 454,
    Bravo III, all stock.
Expect mid 50's with some bobbing.....and bow rise.
I put some tabs on it two years ago for him and it has helped
ride, take off, etc. - -> they are very light in the front.
You would think the B III would have helped some, but
the design of the hull is not the most modern around.
Dr's correct, they are just an upscale production boat
    with Bayliner ties.
But a boat is a boat if you know what to expect and it's
a good deal. They are a deep, high sided boat and it
won't get you wet in rough water.
I would plug off the transoms, they don't help and there is
no worse sound than a stock cammed low horse big block
    with open exhausts blap..blap...blap.

They're more stylish than bayliners , but like oldrat said ,make a nice cruiser with the exhaust thru the hub. They come with 300HP 454 only and don't know if the hull would stand up for big HP increase.Bayliners had layup inconsistency and maxums are probably no different .

    Fo,
Don't get me wrong, they are a big cockpit, high transom
boat that is great for the family. The only thing my neighbor
he has done to it since '96 (besides the tabs) is change
the oils and filter, clean a in-line filter on the pump for
the transom shower and hose it off now and then.
(He ain't into the buff and shine shit like me)
If he can get it right $$ and the motor has no problems and
the drive hasn't been wacked, it probably would give him
a good ride till he wants to step up.

I hear ya. Thats what I was thinkin. My Buddy started out right with a Sanger Mini day jet, then switched to a Keaton jet. I think he really wants an offshore style boat! Not sure if performance is his thing yet. I think he is trying to have enough room so the wife will be happy! He does like riding in my Jet boat, but says its to small for him and his wife would never get in it! The motor has a Hyro Roller cam(small) Merlin heads and a Victor intake. I think the drive is stock. Will it have a problem with speeds above 60? I think the guy wants 12K for it

If the motor is what they say, yeah, it ought to hit low 60's and
maybe a little more with a light load and a good tune-up.
The neighbor's has a BIII on it, so I think that does hold you
back a little when looking to hit 60 +.
If it's got a trailer and all the stuff it's worth at least 12K.

I owned a 1996 Maxum 2000SCL Cuddy Cabin for 5 years and had good luck with it. It had the 5.7L Merc with the Alpha I. The boat did have quite a bit of bow rise and tended to porpoise at higher speeds. My wife and I liked it when our kids were smaller since it had lots of freeboard. Definately a good first boat.
