You want the "open" end of the electrode to face the intake valve/

You're locating the gound strap base farthest away from the piston. Assuming you are doing this to keep from closing the gap due to close piston dome clearance. Unless you're trying to point the open gap of the plug toward an intake or exhaust valve. In which I don't think any performance is there.

The way I understood it was to have the back of the ground strap as far away from the flame travel to keep it some what cooler and have the open part towards the qwench area.

For indexing spark plugs and not for piston clearance go here: http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...gs/index.shtml

I think waxing the bottom of the boat and losing ten pounds would bring better results...

I always heard it should point to the intake, but the article says exhaust

Well, SBC angle plug heads point at exhaust. Stuff like this is where a dyno would be fun.
Blown is gonna buy us all one to play with. Soon as he finishes that "Gearhead's, Dyno's and Jetboat's" book he's writting.

I always index the plugs. Have for many years.
    Cannot hurt huh?
Most of the time I can get 6 of 8 pretty close in any given box of plugs.

I confess I have always done it also. Quench area is usually so tight I will close the plug gap if I don't. I only buy cylinder heads that use the old style large spark plug (3/4' reach) for cheap plug availabilty.
Usually one or two cylinders I have to play with washers to get index.
