Sea Strainers

I'm considering putting a sea strainer on my boat. I have the Merc 496 HO and spend a fair amount of days at the Sand Bar above Havasu in the summer. My concern is with the dual water pick up on the newer bravo drives that I'm occasionally packing the lower pick up with sand etc. While I'm careful not to just plow the drive into the sand, I've definitely sucked some up in there a couple of times.
My question is, where is the sea strainer located and how is it plumbed?
Will this help keep me from prematurely burning up the rubber impeller on the water pump?
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The screen is to coarse to stop sand. Will stop the small rocks.

Sand can get through a strainer. Sand can accumulate in the block and exhaust...not good.
A strainer is plumbed after the pickup (usually mounted on the transom) and before the pump.
The best way to keep sand out of your engine is to keep the outdrive away from the sand.

There was a thread not long ago about this. Maybe someone knows it or you can do a search. The bottom line was they are a good idea. When I have my boat in for any kind of work Iam going to have one installed.

Strainer are great to keep large pebbles and debris out of your water system. Sand and silt will pass right through, if it did not they would pack with sand and clog. They are even more important in the fact that they add extra water capacity to your cooling system while your drive is out of the water and help with aeration problems which can occur due to turbualnce infront of your drive. Their pricey but worth it in my opinion.
