I am in the process of rebuild my 96 merc 350 lx and was wondering about head gasakets is there a difference between the off the shelf stuff and mercs head gaskets? i was told the merc gaskets were ringed with stainless steel around all water passages for corosion resistance. but i don't know. i would like to use the all copper soft gaskets if possable. thanks

Aftermarket is fine BUT make sure it says MARINE on it. I use Fel-Pro Marine

Could you elaborate a little more. I've rebuilt a couple of engines for customers the last couple of years and have had no problems yet with the permatorque blue that come in the Fel-pro gasket set. Thanks

The marine uses Stainless so they won't rust, don't worry about a come-back for a while, by the time the standard auto gaskets rust through they will have hopefully sold their boats.
