Thread: Oil for 496 Mag motor

    What oil are you guys running in Mercruiser 496 Mag motors? Mercury recommends their 25W-40, or a straight weight oil. I would think that 20W-50 would be better for hot climates (Havasu),if you can't find the Mercury oil.

    I use mult grade MOBIL ONE 20-50wt.

    as soon as i get around to changing my oil, it will be amsoil 20w50 synthetic in a 500efi.

    I JUST PURCHASED 2002 MERC 496 MAG 375 AND RUN AT HAVABREW STRAIGHT 40WT IS THE OIL THAT IM USING. THAT WAS THE REC FROM MY WRENCHER.

    Just a small word of warning, if you do not use 100% mercury approved oil, it can and will void your warranty if there are any serious warranty claims. merc has been known to ask dealers to send an oil sample for testing to verify the oil's components.

    a warranty cannot be voided if you are using an oil of the correct weight and grade. the whole, "you have to use x-brand" oil is a ploy by the manufacturer to make you think you have to use their oil. whether it's ford, chevy, mercury, etc telling you that your warranty will be voided by using another oil they are wrong.
