    sorry dog
Hoss - buddy of mine had a YJ a year or two before they switched to TJ. It had an AX-15. He had a lot of problems with that one. I dunno if they switched later on.
The guys over at www.pirate4x4.com (http://www.pirate4x4.com) with be familiar with your ride. They occasionally get on flame fests over there so you oughta feel at home.
BTW - TC = transfer case

Easiest way to fix the problem is to get a Landcruiser- it probably wouldn't have broken and the brand new factory replacement H55F is only $1800.
NV4500 is a great replacement and advance adapters should have the shit to make it work. It will be a bit more, but those are very tough. Might as well get a decent TC at the same time- like a NP205. After that - your only weak link will be the driveshaft and axles.
Why make it so difficult putting Toyota parts in a Jeep??? If it is the t-case, Advanced Adapters has a bolt-in Atlas II with extreme low-range for about $2,300. Its the shiznit but its not cheap. All the extreme rock-buggies and rock Jeeps run this case. It can handle V-8 power and 37" tires no problem. But unless you are doing some serious wheeling its overkill. The T-case in your jeep is a NP231 and it is a good solid unit good for over 150k miles if not abused. They are so abundant you should be able to get a junk-yard t-case for $250-500 with low miles. Do not try to swap in a 205, its too big and heavy, has a very high low range, and it won't fit.
Hoss, I have a 97 Jeep and have several buddies with these things. I know a few with over 150k on the clock and no major drive-line issues. What kinda miles and what size tires are you running? Seems like an odd problem for such a new jeep. These TJs are pretty bullet proof. Mine has been great but it has very low miles.
You may want to check out the Jeeper boards. They are a great resource and you will get much more experienced Jeepers answering your questions.

The 35 is not the best rear but the miles are low to loose it. I have the 44 with stock gears and run 32's behind the 4.0 with a few minor bolt-on motor mods and have run a few tough trails and never had a problem in 45k miles other than a seal leak fixed under warranty.
The factory track-loc limited slip was replaced under warranty beacause I thought it wasn't hooking up right. Turned out that's just the way they are. The service writer is cool at my dealer and didn't hesitate to get me a new one under my extended warranty.
One of those links I sent has trannys and t-cases for cheap.
You know, I just realized, your Jeep should be under the 7/70 power train. Put that thing back together and get it to the dealership.

I think they started the 7/70 in 2001. I have a 2000 and it doesn't have that warranty...
