No torque converters. Use a coupler. We need pics to show us what you have.
I just bought my first v drive boat. I have always had jets in the past. It is a 20 ft howard ski race deal. Any way I wanted to know how the motor hooks to the tranny it came with out a motor; do I use a torque converter or some kind of coupler.

picture kinda bad. the trans is an art carr th400

I think those use a special coupler dealio. It's kinda like a clutch plate that bolts to the flywheel of the motor and matches the input shaft on the transmission.
Someone will chime in and do a better job than I am describing.
Might be best to get hol dof the guy you got it from. The coupler kinda goes with the tranny on these deals.
Fiat48 is right. From the motor, It's a flywheel that a flex plate bolts to. The flex plate has a inner diameter spline in the center of it. A coupler with a outer diameter spline slips into the flex plate. On the other end of the coupler is a notched tube that mates with the transmission. I think Art Carr makes most of the couplers.
Heavy Duty Drive Plate and Spline Drive (http://www.rexmar.com/page310.html)
The HD Drive Plate bolts to a solid type flywheel which will usually require machining in the center to clear the rivits. The spline drive engages the HD Drive Plate and the front pump of the transmission. Just give a call if you need any help.
There's one more trick set up I've seen. It's made by Hughes Transmissions. I belive it bolts directly to the flywheel and inputs into the trans. No coupling gap and spacers to worry about.
I had my local converter shop lock up a converter for me. Alot cheepar that a splind and pump drive.

we did the same thing. it works great and it also holds a gallon more fluid.
